ProtonVPN Review

ProtonVPN is one of the leaders in the consumer Privacy Industry with their VPN product which nearly guarantees your online privacy.  One the largest and best offerings, they are consistently close to the top spot on many VPN lists.

Summary

ProtonVPN is a full consumer level VPN provider, they are in the top 5 in this industry in most categories of comparison.  Their VPN comes with all the same basics as their competitors, AES256 Encryption, over 1000 servers (a little lower than competitors) around the world in over 50 countries, zero logging of your activities, Tor Support, P2P/Torrent, streaming & torrent support in a tiered pricing structure, almost an à la carte menu.  They also have some more advanced features that don’t serve the masses but are beneficial to some of us, some fancy geo-blocking tricks for streaming Netflix, BBC, Router Support via OpenVPN, Kill Switch, etc.  They do formally support split-tunnels and this is one example of where ProtonVPN shines in their ease of use.  Proton runs on most platforms you have for Mobile, Desktop & my favorite is the Router.  For 90% of us, ProtonVPN covers everything you could ever need. It’s worth noting that ProtonVPN has the best user interface of all of the VPN products we’ve reviewed, most users will figure out how to use this product on their own in about 1 minute or less. I should point out that I’ve been testing ProtonVPN for over a year as a paying customer and will continue being a customer of ProtonVPN.

Target Market

Who really needs a VPN?  Some of us need them for work, some for recreation, some of us just want to hide our internet activities from prying eyes & intrusive governments.  You don’t need to be doing anything illegal to need a VPN.  I manage engineering teams around the globe and have found that using a VPN into the country where my engineers are to purchase products works much more seamless and some websites even have different prices based on your IP address!  When I’m visiting my engineering teams I use my VPN back to the US to do almost everything on my mobiles & laptops because I set off all sorts of alarms from foreign login sensors, sometimes I’ve even been blocked from visiting certain sites in some countries, I use it to stream Netflix & Prime in my hotel.  ProtonVPN gets all of that done and much much more.  Proton has a few delay issues on some streaming platforms, I suspect they are intercepting geo-blocking rejections and making adjustments then trying again without updating us on our end. Maybe you want to do some more illicit things like downloading movies from a torrent site over peer to peer or use a Tor browser, Proton still has you covered.  This is one of the VPN’s I use for my family on my kids devices because our schools block google hangouts, which is my family’s primary communication tool, ProtonVPN fixes that problem without breaking a sweat, allowing up to 10 simultaneous devices conntected.

Whats Good about ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN scored between average and above average on speed tests when compared to their peers.  Posting speed tests here is useless, the numbers change from second to second, you would have to run 100 speed tests to replicate the same results twice! They support streaming, gaming, P2P, concurrent connections.  They seem to do a slightly better job at streaming when geo-blocking is in place than most of their competitors.  Data Leak tests showed zero leaks, however without the ad-blocking features (see below), I can’t give them highest marks. Again, Proton sports the most user friendly experience out of all of their competitors.

Whats Bad about ProtonVPN

They made it into our top 5, but not the highest position. Ad-Blocking is conspicuously missing from ProtonVPN’s offerings, it’s something I like to see in a VPN because ads are technically a data leak because they can be used to track or identify who or where you are. Speed is lacking severely in some locations, but you can always change to a new connection location and improve that.

Technical Specs/Setup/Operation/etc.

  • Requirements – Windows 7+, macOS/OSX, Linux, Android, iOS, AmazonFire, OpenVPN.  If you have a device that’s not supported by ProtonVPN it’s probably time to upgrade your device.
  • Setup – Download, run installer and click next about 3-4 times.  Sign in with your username & password then you’re done!
  • Operation – Even easier than the setup, choose a country on the map or in the list of countries, then connect.  You can even setup profiles to repeat same connections with a click of the button. I use and love this feature.

Conclusion

Proton is one of the best all-around VPN’s on the market.  Their product will cover over 90% of users that need or want a VPN.  They are by far the easiest product to use, user interface is consistent across devices. We strongly recommend ProtonVPN.
